History & Background

This is where the community that became Darien actually began. There was a small but serviceable harbor here, and an estuary that could be dammed to power a grist mill. The new settlement that was growing in eastern Stamford would have water access to the rest of the world, and the capability of turning its extensive grass crops – corn, wheat, oats, rye – into food for man, woman and beast, all within a short walk from the main country road.
