‘Bits and Pieces’ 18th, 19th and 20th Century Quilt Show

DARIEN, CT., September 30, 2022 – ‘Bits and Pieces’, an exhibit of 18^th, 19^th and 20^th century quilts from the collection at the Museum of Darien opens on October 14^th. A wine and cheese reception open to the public takes place at 7pm. Tickets for the reception, available at museumofdarien.org are $20 for members, $30 for non-members.

Featured at the exhibit are the Rail Fence Quilt, the Trowbridge Crazy Quilt and the oldest quilt in the show is a Wholecloth Quilt, sewn in 1790. The Rail Fence Quilt was made of the colorful silks and satins used in the linings of hats from the Norwalk Hat Factory. Dated and signed in 1884, the Trowbridge Crazy Quilt features details that include the 1783 Washington Headquarters, Five Mile River and a Garfield campaign ribbon. It was found in 1950 in the Long Neck Point Road residence of Emily Nash Trowbridge of Darien. The very rare Wholecloth Quilt, made with green wool, was hand pieced and hand quilted to create a medallion pattern, and used a 34 inch loom to weave the green top.

The ’Bits and Pieces’ quilt exhibit runs through November 23rd, with visiting hours on Tuesdays through Thursdays, from 11am to 4pm. Admission is $5.
