Darien's Sidewalk Sales and Family Fun Days start Wednesday, July 28!

Do you know how long this tradition has been ongoing?

At least since the early 1970's! For the bicentennial year, 1976, an art and poetry contest was held along with the sales. Carnival tents were set up at the Noroton Heights shopping center and on the Post Road. The event also welcomed a German "uumpah" band, the chance to have "old time" photos taken, cabaret shows, clowns and other performers, as well as the usual peanuts and popcorn! Craftsman also did live exhibits of their work on the Whaleboat Middlesex at the sales.

Advertisements at the time indicated "historical bargains" were to be found.

Did you know? On this day, July 22, 1781, the Rev. Moses Mather, along with dozens of worshippers, was taken from his pulpit on the grounds of the current First Congregational Church of Darien by a group of Tories and imprisoned in New York.

You may have seen this event marked by Town Hall murals - this one in the auditorium, captured here by Karen Polett.

"Sunday July 22nd, 1781, Capture of the Rev. Moses Mather & His Flock by Tory Raiders from Lloyd’s Neck, LI," and the other Town Hall murals were painted in the 1930's as part of an art program funded by the Federal Government.

The Mather Homestead of Darien, was built in 1778 by Joseph Mather, son of Moses Mather, and is now a museum and educational center. The Rev. Mather was eventually released and served as the pastor of his parish until his death in 1806.

Expect to learn more about these events in detail as we celebrate Darien's bicentennial this fall. #darien2020

Thursday, July 22 is the return of #Darien's firew

Thursday, July 22 is the return of #Darien's fireworks.

Back in July 1974, Darien was apparently the only fireworks show that year. News reports at the time say the crowd was enormous. Darien Police reported about 14,000 in attendance at Darien High. There were 2,022 cars on town roads, 710 cars at the high school, 600 combined at St. Thomas More and the Methodist Church, and 175 in private driveways. Town officials at the time said they might have to reconsider having fireworks again if they were the only ones due to crowd capacity. The headline said "Fireworks - were they too good?"

You've seen the Whaleboat Middlesex but here's a little bit of a blast from the past (our specialty). The Middlesex was originally commissioned to launch to celebrate the country's bicentennial in 1976. Construction delays led to it being officially launched in April 1977. "The band played, cannon roared and a Coast Guard boat sent up pink smoke signals as the Middlesex hit the water. She listed to starboard briefly before her gallant volunteer crew righted her," as reported by the Darien New Review.
On July 2, 1977, a race was held against a similar whaleboat built in Huntington, New York. Though Darien did not prevail, as the paper reported, a more serious challenge was averted in April.
"Tories from across the Sound — 17 had been expected — never showed dup and the launching was safely completed."
The construction, from construction, painting, linens and flags, was a true community effort — making it more celebratory than ever that its been restored it to its original glory, thanks to the generosity of @thedarienfoundation. #Darien2020

We are excited to host the reunion of Darien High School's bicentennial Class of '76 this fall! What a perfect year to do it as we celebrate Darien's bicentennial this fall as well! If you are a member, don't forget to RSVP! #darien2020

Did you know? The Museum of Darien's colonial-era

Did you know? The Museum of Darien's colonial-era memorial herb garden was established 1969 by the Garden Club of Darien after the Bates Scofield House was restored — the garden earned several national and local awards at the time. In the fall of 1974, the Garden Club chose, as its bicentennial project, to finish the then-named Darien Historical Society's landscaping, including planting "authentic 18th century period climbing roses and a front walk that would be appropriate to early colonial farm houses. The Garden Club gave the museum an additional grant in 2005 to build a children's garden. Heirloom seeds are also offered.
