What a fabulous afternoon celebrating Marian Castell’s accomplishments and numerous contributions to the Town of Darien over the last 45 years. Thank you Marian!

Please join us at the Museum of Darien as we celeb

Please join us at the Museum of Darien as we celebrate and honor Marian Castell, who has spent four decades preserving the historic buildings in the Town of Darien.

Armed with her powers of persuasion, Marian Castell has saved one historic home after another. She is a former Selectman, former Historical Society board member and President, and since 1996, Town Historian.

Thank you to @laurenkeena for a truly special evening of needlepoint. Come visit our Homestead to see one of our most treasured artifacts, a sampler stitched by 14 year old Catharine Scofield (1814-1884), who was one of 9 children that grew up in this house.

Museum of Darien is proud to celebrate the legacy

Museum of Darien is proud to celebrate the legacy of our great leaders on Presidents’ Day featuring this Federal Land Grant from our archival collection, signed March 1, 1800. It was given to Veteran William Walmsley (1759-1827) of Darien, who served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. Signed by our 3rd President, Thomas Jefferson and 4th President, James Madison, who signed as Jefferson’s Secretary of State. Can you picture Thomas Jefferson and James Madison spending their days personally signing land grants for army veterans?
This grant gave property in Ohio to William Walmsley and his heirs. As an immigrant from England, who thought that the Americans should be allowed to govern what they had created, he came to America during the war to fight for American independence. It is said that he served in Stamford with a small detachment of Continentals.
Following his service, he met a local girl named Prudence Weed. They prospered and had 9 children together eventually living in and owning the Epenetus Weed House located at 89 Hollow Tree Ridge Road, built in 1735. The house while handsomely renovated still stands today.
Their son, Epenetus, became Captain of the local militia company, and his grandson, also William Walmsley, served his country in the Connecticut Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War. #darien #history #museumofdarien
